Great list, fella. I had no idea that Wolf Parade had a vid for Shine A Light! That's what living in the UK does for you. I'd say that Lit Up by The National was my favourite. Something about those visuals that go so well with the music. Where was Disco Infiltrator by LCD Soundsystem though? Such an underrated video.

Keep the faith,

this has got to be the stupidest list of Top 50 Music Videos of 2005. If you're gonna make a list you might as well include different genre. Wtf is this. I only know like 1 of the artists in the whole entire list. Geez. MTV's best music video would probably not even include any of these songs.

31 december, 2005 02:06
Anonymous Anonym said...

the title of that bright eyes song is "easy/lucky/free" - also, that's not the real video for the song, lol. where did you get that?

also, to anon - just b/c you don't know the artists doesn't mean they aren't good. retard.

I enjoyed your list but I think that I enjoyed the posts more. I especially like the ones where people complained about not knowing the artists/songs. I don't think that they read the title which is "top 50 best music videos of 2005". music videos. videos.

i love how everyone keeps talking about how mtv has better videos or there arent any songs that would be on mtv....see, thats because MTV SUCKS. most of the bands they show are overrated and dont even care about the videos, they just want to make it and pick up their paychecks. i dont know all the bands on here but i plan on watching the videos and im sure there are some videos that arent on here that should be, but please, dont compare mtv to any of this.

Anonymous Anonym said...

Oh my lord.

Not insulting your intelligence, but what the hell does anyone care what you personally think the top 50 videos are???

First of all, About 50 of those videos suck, both graphically and the choreography suck. And as far as the animated ones go, if you're gonna use cartoons to display your so called "art" draw the animations frames your own dumb self. And another 50 (guess which) of those videos are also, ironically, crappy songs.

Second issue I have. This is a blog. Every once in a while, I wander off to a crappy website, see the bullshit, notice random idiots praising some jobless asshole with comments like "nice cumpilation m8 =D lol XoX" I mean honestly, you're probably never gonna see that loser with horrible taste that walks around 5th street with a 25$ Mocchaccino Latte Frappe and an IPod Nano wearing what he believes is metrosexual streetwear and believes in his own visions of inspiration. Seriously, take a second, look at yourself, stab your eyes out with your 34$ pencil and get a real hobby.

Blogs are by-far the most overrated waste of internet bandwidth and CNN is really really pushing it, same with NBC news and FOX news. enough abotu my hate for blogs, I'm gonna use the best waste of internet bandwidth out there, FREE INTERNET PORN. I'm out

all you have to do is check out metacritic.com to tell you how hot this s**t is. At least half the bands on this list hit critical acclaim status by most critics' standards. If you've never heard of these bands before, you're watching too much MTV (the McDonald's of mainstream music) and letting phillistine consumerism get in the way of actually aquiring good taste in music. Granted, this list is particularly indie-friendly, but SO what.

The Planets- Moving Along

also No Good by Plan B is rap
and I suppose Hell Yes (Beck) counts as well, hell there's even some in Feel Good Inc and Dirty Harry.

also everybody care less. This is just one person's opinion of what some good videos this year are, nobody's forcing you to watch them. also I don't see what posting long insulting rants is going to do to solve anything

01 januar, 2006 18:25
Anonymous Anonym said...

I like how one of the posts above was a rant on how he/she thinks blogging is a waste of time and waste of the internet.... yet that was the longest post here. Good one, you sure proved your point.

I liked the list. Very different and versitle. For people who are crying about no MTV and Good Charolote.... please spare yourself some time. OBVIOUSLY, this list is of personal oppinion. Yours is not needed. And in addition, Good Charolote sucks, we dont need anymore sell outs. And with regards to the "biased towards rap music," it seems to me that you are the one biased towards everything else. Rap videos are all the same and not creative. This list is for artisits who have compiled an original.
ANYWAYS...
high five to the list maker(s). very well thought out.

Overall a great list and a very nice setup.
All of you who enjoy this music join the flock at www.woxy.com (if your not already listening)

And are the majority of rap videos currently artistic? They include women and money. Hip-Hop is at a loss since it used to be a new form of expression not cliche MTV garbage.

Although some Kanye and Dangerdoom would have been nice on the list. I also enjoyed some of Pharrell's collaborative videos this year.

Hey it's the guy who didn't ike this idiotic blog again.

If a band is unknown to most, by this I do not mean none of the bands on here are unknown to me, I mean a few of them you will never hear of ever again, thus, if they are the "best of 2005" I should have heard about them, not by means of MTV or whatnot, for I do not watch that garbage, but more by the radio, I listen to the radio constantly at work, and agreed, radio does push the so-called MTV music, but not all the stations do. And as far as that pumpous blowhard saying I was suppressed by the god of consumerism, he's mad because he's one of those losers that walks downtown, dressed like a fashion critique, sipping of Starbucks with an IPod stuck way up his ass with music he only listens to because he believes it is good. Good music is music that makes you move, rock hard, makes you wanna go nuts. Not music that makes you think "What the hell does he mean?" followed by very unoriginal instrumental background noises they call music.

You can say I'm not open minded enough, whatever, it's not like I didn't just give these 50 crapfests a chance, believe me I did. But honestly, this was a great year for Rock and Metal music too. Come on, System of a Down took out 2 albums, something you don't see every year. And both those albums rocked on. they deserve at least one spot on there, not my personnal opinion, the opinion of logic where "Cocorosie = Crap" and "SoaD = fun to listen to"

I'm mostly a hard rocker, mostly. But I do listen to some hip-hop, rap, urban, reggae and a lot of classical. But bands without a category for what they play is just bad listening and very boring, meaningless music.

Same applies with U2's latest filthfest. I don't know why they had such a hit with HTDAAB. I know most of you douches believe in Bono and what he claims to stand for. but he is just a petty idiot who tries to get global attention by acting as if he actually gave a rat's shit about the people and kids in poor assed countries that all give each other aids because they're too stupid to know better than to, oh I don't know, not have sex? You have no food, no money, barely a house to live in, hey let's have sex, I'll get pregnant, then maybe the christian's Children's fund will sponsor my baby, who will die either way so I can eat food. If Bono really did care about the poor he'dd do something better than make us feel bad for his greediness. "Crumbs off the table" or whatever the song is called is the apex of hypocrisy. He's got millions to give to help those poor bastards, but instead of investing his own money, he tries to get his >70 IQ fans to give their money instead.

That being said....I oughta start the blog to end all blogs, full of anger, logic and reason, and the fact that I hate blogs, no one would be allowed to reply or e-mail me anything, all you can do is read and understand that blogs are a waste of time and internet space, as well as porn but at least someone's making a living on the other end.

01 januar, 2006 23:31
Anonymous Anonym said...

And as far as "I have the longest reply here". that was the point. I wanted to get noticed, and I'm glad I did.
If you're gonna make a "best of 2005" list, have a continental-wide survey, have a list of all the videos that came out, get everyone to write in their 50 favorites and then tell me how many of those make it on to that top 50 after averaging the scores and actually getting a top 50.

And since when is someone who doesn't like your musicless music, instantly considered a Good Charlotte fan? I barely know who they are, but I know they are what MTV wants to make mainstream for angry little kids who look up to punk stars that are actually through and through POP.

Well well - I'm one of the founders of this blog and off course get highly offended by your comment. But one can only wonder why you wan't to empty yourself in such a super super lame way. I love the term independant music. Even though in there is Beck, Arcade Fire, The Cardigans, Gorillaz, Oasis...Come on and tell me those are all independant. It's basically just bad songs with bad videos of 2005 that no one likes, except us because we're different and we see the music for what it is. But no, you don't.

I believe everyone deserves a chance in the music industry, which is basically what independant music is supposed to be, people who want to break through, kinda like all the big bands/artists we know now, not referring to teenage popstars & rock icons, just big names of artists with talent like Ted Nugent, Elton John, Queen. Those aren't my personnal favorites, they are just good artists that broke through and became famous. The music posted up there, I exaggerated, some songs are good, but most of them absolutely do NOT deserve a spot on the top 50 best and that's for sure, maybe the title "My 50 favourite videos of 2005" would have been more appropriate.

I still hate the whole blog thing, but that's just because people actually do care what people type, although you never ever will meet any of the people that actually like blogging, simply because it's just weird/creepy to meet someone you "met" on the internet.

yeah a few of the vids on here are good, but a lot of them are just rock songs who just want play off of people who want to seem like they listen to music that's special because it's not mainstream. I hate most mainstream stuff myself but I know not all stuff that isn't isn't good and some mainstream stuff can be good. For those downing rap nowadays there isn't much good stuff out there now because most rappers are trying to restore rap to its former glory when they do nothing but destroy is. This doesn't mean that all rap sucks though. There are plenty of good rappers including Mos Def and Talib Kweli and there have been many good rappers in the past so dont generalize. There are a few videos here that have rap in them.

Why must everyone try to understand (judge?) the taste of others? Why can't you all just watch and comment on what you like or not, instead of calling the blog owner this or that, or considering you own taste "common sense"? We are individuals, for hell's sake.

Jeez.

Oh, and Batmanners, that "more appropriate title" line just took out all credit your comment still had. Whatever anyone, blog or magazine or specialist, calls "top 50" or "best of", it will ALWAYS be the author's opinion. If we were to act according to you, every single sentence would start with "I think that..." or "According to XYZ,..."

Now I can't stop listening to them. I even went to store today and bought their CD. Seriously, their music is the only thing that is actually getting me through this dreary holiday season cuz I'm stuck working here in NYC.

Their song Aftermath is my favorite. Anyway, thanks for turning me onto Kashmir. I realize I sound insane or maybe I am trying to promote this band. I'm not.

Most people who read this blog agree that popular music isn't necessarily good music. But some of those same people go so far as believing that popular music inherently can't be good music, or that underground music is inherently good music. Anti-fashion has grown into a fashion. Give popular music a chance (yes, even rap) just as you would underground music (yes, even rap). It just makes you seem like pompous tryhards, which isn't exactly better than the mindless drones you like to target. Buying a t-shirt at a show doesn't make you a better person than a person who buys a t-shirt from hottopic. Again, this is for the select few.

Im my humble yet observant and always right & iliterate opinion, all of these videos a GREAT because all of these songs are WEAK! Theyre a nice background for someone else (directors/video artists) to do their art over the top of but they would be dull as poop on my headphones staring out the bus window.. ITs like Tangerine Dream in Riskey Business. that was great, perfect soundtrack stuff but a fuckin snooze on its own.
Here in Seattle theres a jackass program director morning show masterbator named John Richards who more or less plays all of these songs every morning (without the entertaining videos) & forces me to listen to cassettes on the way to work because i dont want to fall asleep and miss my stop.

great videos.
good "soundtrack"

I'm pretty sure I've seen most of these videos on MTV or one of it's offspring. So yes MTV plays a lot of crap, but they also play good stuff, all you have to do is look past the bs, all big bands start out small and some have to oppertunity to make a buck and live their lifes doing what they do...the ones everyone are so against still produce some good stuff sometimes even though it may not be that groundbreaking, which a lot of these are. So what am i trying to say you ask? music is everywhere, keep your ears open to everything. and about the rap comment, there is plenty of good hip hop out there, many of which get very little play, and it is a shame that many didnt make it onto this list, but it's only persons view point, and you know what it's a pretty decent list. so thanks.

Wow. Talk about a tough crowd.
First, I love the freedom of expression exercised on this blog, but always there is a bit of hate and ignorance in the mix. Regardless, I love the videos that are here and I thank the sites creator for posting them for the world to see. Here is my POV on the nonsense posted.

Yes, MTV sucks and rap rules on MTV because it sells. Network penny pinchers follow popular trends, and they don't give a crap if you like it or not. Joe & Suzy butt kiss love the crap that airs on that channel and that's what really matters to suits.

If you hate rap why hate black people? Not all rap sucks like the corporate crap of today, but why come down on an entire race because you hate rap. Not all black people listen rap. I know because I'm black. SURPRISE! Some of today's rap is okay, but most of it sucks! If I don't care for Xiu Xiu or Supergrass, I don't get angry with white people.

Music is music folks whether you love it or hate it.
Sheesh!

P.S. The Xiu Xiu video reminds me of Devo's Love Without Anger video.

Impressive, this. I'm not sure which is more entertaining; the videos themselves, or some of the moronic comments (on both sides of the argument) posted with regard to them. Nonetheless, while I don't like everything on there, it's nice to finally get the chance to see some of these videos, not just because many are accompanied by some of the best music of the year, but also because most of them, like the music, try something new and interesting. Sure, they're not always successful, but at least they make the effort.

The mentallity of your viewers looks to sit between "Loyal Fan of Indie" and a 15 year old looking implode the Earth with his explicit social commentary. It all seems to be a less compelling look back to elementary school for those few A.D.D. kids that couldn't get along with anyone, except 10 times worse and no recess in sight.

MTV doesn't suck out your soul, or musical taste, if you watch it. MTV does play a few good videos mixed in with the rest of the slop they dish out. That's where I saw the Decemberists' video. Nice to see it again because I really enjoyed it. MTV made a few good things, like Sifl 'n Olly (which was made by Indie roots). But I guess you kids would look at the switch to MTV as selling out.

Over all I will say this is a good list. Especially with Aphex Twin at the front.

Yeah thats cool. lots of good videos. but there fucking quicktime so the volume resets EVERY TIME YOU PLAY A DIFFERENT VIDEO.. and of course i have to lunge at the volume icon (when there is one, aparently its optional on some vvideos ???) so that my 300watt amp doesnt blow my speakers out. not to mention i have to buy some quictime pro product to download them? as if! you probably cant even pirate it because its mac software.

To all of those who say that rap doesnt require talent.... get your head out of your ass... Most of you only listen to the popular crap like 50 cent and whatever they play in clubs and on MTV. The real rap is underground and dont have videos and arnt played on the radio. trying listing to the line up of rappers signed to rhymesayers entertainment and listen to some atmosphere and tell me that doesnt required talent to tell a story in the way that he does and come up with those lines. anyone who says rap sucks is just falling in with all the others who havent herd any REAL rap and are too stuck up to actually listen to it... by the way this is coming from someone who listens to royskopp and the faint and the knife and zoot woman not some suburban wanna be gansgter kid. wicked post with the videos.

I very much enjoyed your list.
I, personally, would have added - maybe one or two things - but, thereagain, that is my personal opinion.

As much as I'd love to plug whatever band it is that OMG U FURGOT "BLOOD SCREAM DEATH FUNERAL", I think I'll spare you.

Thank you for putting this list together - I've shown it to a lot of people, and they've all enjoyed it very much.

Everyone who is posting with the intent on bashing someone else's musical taste - on the internet - needs to just chill out.

If you have a problem with this list, why not stop complaining and whining about how much this list is lacking, and compile your own list of videos made by whatever abrasive and caustic band/genre you want. I'm not being sarcastic or sardonic: really, go and make your own list - and post it. You've still got around a week and a half or so before the "Best of 2005" thing goes out of phase - catch it before it ends.

If you're going to bash the personal choices made in this post - you're both puting argument towards a moot point, and generally showing how little you understand about someone stating their "personal opinion" on musical tastes.

Skimming through these posts has been one of the most mind-numbing experiences I've had in a while - but then it occurs to me: this is the internet - and I begin to understand.

That being said, again - thank you for this list. Who cares what I agree on, or disagree on - it's your list, and it's a nice list.

Rock on, sir.

Nice list of inspiring music videos. Good to see people still appreciate unpredictable videos. The music might not always be great, but at least the videos are worth a look.

some comments on the comments:
1. System of a Down did two (okay) albums, but the videos werent all that exciting.
2.Good Charlotte are a bunch of hypocrit sell-outs, but people buy it, so who cares? they don't make good videos though.

Slagging people off because you have a boring life is one of the democratic joys of internet. I just prefer spending time on something i do like.

and to all the stupid people: Dont' forget, it's about music videos! not about whether you love the song.

... and those ridiculous racist children should just go and kill themselves, thanks.

Thanks for sharing these vids. I love Face the Truth, so I was darn excited to find out Baby C'mon had a video. Maybe you guys could, taking people's comments into account, put out occasional lists of "50 More Badass Videos to Check Out"? My biggest problem (and not a complaint) with this list was that there were only 50 videos, and I have so much more time to waste online! Please, give us more.

Wow, some people are really ignorant to new music. And if anyone who says that and also says "rap sucks" is being a hypocrit. There's plenty of good rap, check out the Dej Jux label for instance. Thanks for putting all these great videos in one place so I could put them on my iPod.

Overall, a lovely collection although I must raise an eyebrow at your choice of The Strokes' Juicebox video. Thanks a lot for sharing!

Completely random note, one of the gay lads in the Juicebox video was also featured as the main character in John Vanderslice's Exodus Damage. His name is Thomas Aske Berg.
